How did quarantine affect the Lviv labour market?

The pandemic amends the functioning of the Lviv labour market because of its negative impact on the economic development of the city. Since the quarantine was introduced, about 500 companies have declared 3000 vacant jobs, which is almost 4 times less than the previous identical period. Then the number of vacancies was about 11 thousand from 2 thousand economic entities. According to Lviv Regional Employment Center, there are 7 applications for one vacancy. The average salary on the market amounts to 7474 hrn.

Analyzing the impact of the crisis on the labor market and economy, experts say that in the near future the largest number of vacancies will appear in sales and customer service. Now employers are looking for trade and postal services workers such as cashiers, unskilled laborers and couriers. At the same time, there is a demand for loaders and drivers. With the market switching to online, the number of such jobs increased by about 20%.

The most popular professions were healthcare specialists, such as nurses, paramedics.

The number of vacancies on the IT market of Lviv fell by 40%. The number of companies that published vacancies in April decreased by 167 compared to April last year, but preliminary volumes in the IT industry are recovering.

The critical situation is in the tourism sector and HoReCa industry where the vast majority of hotels have suspended their work, and vacancies in restaurants and hotels amounted to about 1% of the market. Companies operating in this segment are facing adverse conditions.

Labour market analysis shows that employers have put recruitment on hold. In particular, it should be noted the desire of entrepreneurs not to take risks due to uncertain future of all sectors of economy.

It is expected that resources will be spent to support the existing business and to create a personnel reserve. According to analysts, about 35 % of the city enterprises can go bankrupt, which will lead to redistribution of the labor market.

Introduction of quarantine measures will change demand and supply at the market in new realities. In the long term, after quarantine easing, market recovery will be gradual and will last up to 3 years.

On the other hand, this situation gives advantage to companies planning to launch new projects. According to forecasts, there is a possibility of changes in the labor market from the current, that is candidate market, to the one where employers will set the rules.
